Hurricane Milton is now a Category 5
On the morning of Monday, October 7, Tropical Storm Milton evolved into a Category 5 hurricane, the highest on the Saffir-Simpson scale.
Hurricane Milton has rapidly intensified to hurricane status and is now heading for Florida.
During its journey it will dangerously approach the Yucatán Peninsula, putting the state of Yucatán and Quintana Roo on high alert.
Its sustained winds are at 156 miles per hour.
Spaghetti weather forecast models point to this major hurricane making landfall very close to Tampa, Florida, and passing through the Florida peninsula, exiting near Orlando.
Authorities in the affected states in both countries are on high alert.
Milton is expected to come dangerously close to Yucatán this afternoon, and hit the peninsula by Thursday morning.
Its arrival in Florida would be on Wednesday morning, but from Tuesday night its winds and cloudiness will already be evident in localities on the Florida coast.
The U.S. National Hurricane Center has issued key alerts warning of life-threatening storm surge with potentially destructive winds.
